An Accra circuit court is expected to
commence hearing of a case in which one Masud Walid Iddrisu is standing
trial for allegedly impersonating Asamoah Gyan, captain of the Ghana
Black Stars.
This follows a botched attempt by the prosecution to
arraign the 21-year-old unemployed before the court, presided over by
Aboagye Tandoh, yesterday.
DAILY GUIDEsources claim Baffour Gyan,
elder brother of the captain; Samuel Anim Addo, Manager of the Asamoah
Gyan Foundation in Ghana and one other person were spotted at the 28th
February Road courts popularly called the Cocoa Affairs courts in
anticipation of the trial.
However, the trio after waiting for hours, left disappointed as the hearing of the case was adjourned to Monday, March 30, 2015.
The
court is set to hear how Iddrisu allegedly introduced himself to
someone (name withheld) as Asamoah Gyan and purportedly requested that
the sum of GH¢20,000 be paid to him (Iddrisu) to enable him rent a
warehouse in Accra to facilitate a supposed trading business in Ghana.
It
stated that the disturbing acts of fraudsters in recent times compelled
Asamoah Gyan to inform friends and gave the manager of the Foundation
the Power of Attorney to track down the suspects.
The source said
in January this year, Iddrisu introduced himself to a witness in the
case resident in America as Asamoah Gyan and expressed his desire to do
business in Ghana.
Iddrisu consequently requested the witness to
transfer GH¢20,000 to enable him rent a warehouse in Accra to facilitate
their trading business and that unknown to Iddrisu, the witness, who
knew Asamoah Gyan, informed Anim about the accused person’s intention to
defraud her.
According to the source, on March 19, 2015 the
witness asked Iddrisu to go to the Mile 7 branch of the Barclays Bank to
withdraw the money and directed the accused person to contact the
manager of the bank for it.
It further stated that after filing
the authorization form to collect the money, Iddrisu presented an
Electoral Commission of Ghana voter’s Identity Card number 3659029080
bearing the photograph of Asamoah Gyan, to cash the money.
The
bank manager alerted the police, leading to the arrest of Iddrisu, who
in his caution statement, said he adopted that plan due to financial
constraints.
