General Secretary of the governing
National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia has called on
the opposition NPP Leader, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to emulate the
statesmanship conduct exhibited by defeated Nigerian President, Goodluck
Jonathan.
President Goodluck Jonathan released an official statement after the announcement of the presidential election results.
The
outgoing President called his main contender, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and
congratulated him hours after the election results were announced on
Tuesday.
Commenting on the warmhearted message from the outgoing President of Nigeria, Asiedu Nketia on Okay FM’s "Ade Akye Abia"
Morning Show reminded Nana Akufo-Addo to embrace such character of
statesmanship to accept defeat without resorting to the law court.
To
him, if there should be any lesson and comparison for the opposition
NPP to make from the just ended elections in Nigeria, then Nana
Akufo-Addo must learn to concede defeat when the results are declared in
order not for Ghanaians to experience what happened in the 2012
elections.
He stressed that it will be in the interest of the
country if leaders don’t instruct their supporters to go for machetes,
stones and sticks to demonstrate against declared election results as
the opposition NPP did after the 2012 elections; adding that such
behavior mar the beauty of democracy and affect development as well.
“If
there should be anything for the NPP, then Nana Addo must learn to
accept defeat. He must emulate the character of Goodluck Jonathan and
not waste our time in court again. They should stop the ‘mitigation
attitude’ and refrain from going for machetes, stones and sticks to
demonstrate against declared results. If we do this, it will inure to
the benefit of all,” he stated.
