Navy officers beat up ‘trotro’ driver for slow driving

Some Navy officers stationed at the Sekondi Naval Base in the Western region have allegedly battered a commercial bus driver for slow driving.

The driver Mathew Anderson, 28, who is a member of the Ghana Private Roads Transport Union (GPRTU) was left with an injured left eye.

As a result of the alleged battery, the GPRTU leadership in Sekondi has resolved never to pick any Navy officer until the issue is resolved.

Anderson, who plies the road from the Sekondi Naval Base Gate to Takoradi, said at about 8.30 am Monday, he had to slow down on the pothole-prone road at the Efia Nkwanta Government Hospital section.

Anderson alleged that a Navy officer in the vehicle began putting pressure on him to speed up in the potholes.

He said when they got to the Sekondi Naval Base Gate, the man in Navy uniform shoved his conductor (mate), switched off the engine and dragged him out of the vehicle and began assaulting him with one other.

“He wanted to go and lock me up… It was one of his colleagues who begged on my behalf before he freed me,” Anderson told Accra-based Citi FM.

The Sekondi GPRTU chairman Joseph Eshun, corroborated the story, adding this is the second time a Navy officer is attacking their members and will not allow it to happen for the third time.

“We have resolved that once you are wearing a Navy uniform we will not allow you to board our vehicles. We are not going to allow anyone to die before we act,” Eshun added.

The matter has been reported at the Sekondi District Police Station.
